In between fighting off rats, protecting people from said creatures, and making sure his wife was alright, and not overly paranoid enough to try and hit people with the chair leg weapons she'd fashioned, Wash had found a new hobby.
He was in one of the observatory areas, marking up one the windows into a grid pattern using one of the pens he'd found. Beside him was several sheets of paper he'd found, and other pens. All the ingredients he needed to create that basis of his normal daily life, a star chart. He may not know where they were, but why waste the opportunity of mapping when you were somewhere new? He could use the computers to create a more permanent record at some point, but until then, it was back to basics in a way he hadn't used since flight school.
At least it was doing something, and it was something that could take a long time.
