Much as Thanksgiving is the sort of holiday meant to be shared by everybody (and look how well that turned out), this one really isn't. It would be, if there were other vets here - it wouldn't even matter if they weren't WWII vets, as long as they were Earth vets.
As it is, though, there isn't anyone on board that fits that description. He's not going to have the drink in the memory of all the soldiers killed that day in the privacy of his own quarters, though, because he's not shutting people out, he's just not inviting anyone along. That means he finds himself in the kitchen, and after three tries he gets a decent beer, and makes a silent toast before he takes his first sip.
