At the university, Halloween was second only to April Fools' Day for people playing pranks on each other, so I woke up on Halloween morning ready to be on my guard. I figured whatever the station had in mind for us (if anything) it wasn't likely to be something I'd find funny, and I wanted to be ready for it, whatever it was.

It hadn't occurred to me that what the station had in store for us wouldn't be something that occurred on board. I hadn't expected the station docking announcement to play, and I sure as hell hadn't expected the world to dissolve around me when I was halfway to the hub to see what was up. I'd never transported before-- it had always been my choice, before, and I'd never planned on going anywhere the other guy might make a mess if I could help it-- but I had just enough time to figure out what the lurching feeling in my stomach probably signified before the station walls vanished.

When I blinked away the sun glare I found myself staring out a window at a bustling city full of people dressed like they were definitely not from 2012. "Well, this is... interesting," I said, turning around to the roomful of Proserpinians who'd apparently been selected to join me on my little day trip.

"I don't think it's in Panem at all," Abed shakes his head, as he finds a pair of pants for himself, and a shirt and vest. "I could be wrong. I don't know your world as well as others. You should grab some boots, too," he added, gesturing at a row of boots, before he goes through the belts to find a couple that have seen better days, and holds one out to Peeta.

"You know other worlds?"

It's not something that Peeta has experienced on the station before now, someone knowing Panem, and it's distracting enough that he pauses while pulling on one of his boots.

"Your story's a series of novels, where I'm from," Abed answers. "Katniss's story, really. I'm sorry she's gone," he offers, sounding no more like a normal, emotional person as he offers his sympathy than he does when discussing anything else. "Also movies, but they came later."

Peeta is right out of the movie, anyway, looking as he does, but Abed has learned that that didn't mean much with Proserpina residents.

The information is just too much to process so Peeta just...doesn't. Not right now. As much as he wants to know what happens to him and Katniss, he doesn't need to predestine his life that way. That's one of the things he hates most about Snow and the Capitol anyway.

"That's...weird but I'm not really surprised. What about this place? Is this a book or something?"

"I don't know yet," Abed answers, and secures the belt around his new breeches. He grabs a dirty old vest with a pocket on the inside for his communicator. "It could be any number of fictions. Or it could just be historical Caribbean. I need to explore first."

"Maybe I should stick with you, then," Peeta decides. Unlike Katniss, he's willing to make partnerships for tactical advantage and while this isn't exactly the same (he's pretty sure Abed doesn't want to kill him) he thinks he might still benefit from an arrangement.

"If that's okay?"

"For some of our time here," Abed agrees as he pockets his communicator. "I will be filming a lot of footage. It's easier not to be noticed on your own."

But he doesn't mind the company, or learning more about Peeta first hand.

"I'm used to cameras," Peeta says dryly. "Which, I guess you knew? You've seen the Games, right?"

Peeta's found if he just ignores the cameras, it's like they don't exist at all.

"After a fashion," Abed confirms. He hasn't seen the Games from Panem, after all. "But this is different. If people notice me, who knows what might happen."

They're not cameras hidden in the environment he uses, but just his communicator. It will stand out, here.

"Well, let's make sure it doesn't happen. I know how to hide when I have to," Peeta says, smiling a little. He's good at hiding in plain sight and knowing how to blend and get along. Maybe they can help each other and scrape out of this alive.

"I'm not worried about me," Abed tells Peeta, when he sounds like it's their problem now. "I'll make it to the end, as long as I stay aloof and stoic. My type is never the type to die before the end. There would be too little catharsis."

Peeta is very much the type to die before the end, but Abed doesn't say so.

"So, uh, what's my type, then? Because that doesn't sound exactly comforting."

Peeta isn't used to anything in his life really being comforting, though, so if he does die back in Panem, he isn't surprised. He's also unsure if he actually wants to know if he dies but the curiosity is driving him crazy.

Well, he asked.

"You're in more danger," Abed says. "People care about you, they can relate to you. Then again, maybe our story will twist the clichés around and I'll die and you'll make it to the end."

It's not very likely, but who knows.
